Nira nodded, reaching for the buttons down his shirt. The talking would be more fulfilling if she could feel him down the entire length of her body, skin to skin. “Every page in your book led from one piece of the puzzle to the next, did you see it?”

“I saw it,” he whispered, pulling the shirt off and helping rid them both of clothes before molding himself back to her.

“How does that explain punching Jibril? Did you work that out?”

“That was me after hitting my snapping point. It started at the penthouse when I defied my father for the first time ever—being directly disrespectful to the king.”

“When he told you not to be alone with me?”

He nodded, his arms tightening. The time in the desert had made him a bit leaner, but his appeal was every bit as strong.

“After that, I fought with him on the beach about you. I think at that point I just said to hell with it, and let instinct drive me in matters I couldn’t let my prince persona handle diplomatically. I didn’t want to leave your future in my father’s hands. I don’t think he’d hurt you, but I just...couldn’t let anyone else take care of you. I wanted it to be me, and it confused me. Plus, let’s be real here, Jibril needed punching.”

Nira could see the progression, one act of rebellion in a moment of stress, followed by another when the world hadn’t imploded the first time. By the time he’d got to Jibril, everything had been so out of control it had probably felt like nothing could make things worse.

Then his words replayed in her mind and she asked, “You fought with the King a second time about me? This was after I moved to the palace?”

  “The same day.”

  “What about?”

“I accused him of bringing you to the palace as leverage in this never-ending conflict with the Al-Haaken, and then refused to marry you. Not that I feel that way now.”

“So the King had been trying to make you marry me for weeks?”

“You know, opinions formed by six-year-olds rarely work out well for grown men.”

  “You think?”

He grinned, and that dimple she’d so missed pitted his cheek again.

  “I missed your dimple.”

“I missed everything about you. We didn’t even get a chance to laze about in bed that day, did we? The King arrived, it all went to hell, and I... Actually, that’s the first day I started to really question what I wanted, because I knew I wanted you, even when I denied it to everyone else. I want you, Nira. I want to be with you, and I don’t care where. I want you, and our children. I want to be there for you both, for you all, however many of you all there end up being.”

She felt his breath fan her lips seconds before the first soft brush of his. Her mouth opened and he deepened the kiss, his body scorching the length of hers as he slid between her legs and set her on fire.

As they came together, peace fell over Nira with the certainty they’d found all their missing pieces. They’d roughed out the footprint and dug the foundations, and could start building a life, a family, a home...wherever they decided to put it. Solid. Beautiful. And built far too well to fall in a lifetime.
